Juan Pablo Fuenzalida Werner

Universidad de Navarra, Spain

I am a Chilean scientist specializing in protein engineering and supramolecular materials. My academic journey began with a degree in Pharmaceutical Chemistry from the Universidad Austral de Chile, where I also conducted research on polymer-based nanomaterials. In 2015, I earned my Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Münster, Germany, focusing on polysaccharide–protein interactions. After completing my doctorate, I joined the Helmholtz Zentrum München as a postdoctoral researcher, developing genetically encoded labels and optoacoustic imaging tools under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Andre C. Stiel. From 2020 to 2024, I led a research subgroup at the Technical University of Munich, within the Chair of Biogenic Functional Materials, where I engineered protein-based materials for optoelectronic applications. In 2024, I received the Young Investigator Award from the American Society for Photobiology and became a member of the Editorial Board of Food Hydrocolloids (Elsevier). Currently, I am an Associate Professor of Macromolecular Structures at the University of Navarra and a Ramón y Cajal Fellow. My research focuses on developing engineering strategies to stabilize proteins for applications in environmental science and biomedicine.
